On Hippies, Yuppies and Spirit

There’s times when I look back on it; the naive “I don’t care”
and wonder where we were going and how we’d know we’re there.
Though the wonder of the freedom was a journey on its own,
it would have been so wonderful if seeds we sowed had grown.
The beauty of the notions of peace and love and simple care
went far beyond the weird clothing and how we wore our hair.
The love of Gaia grew there to help to heal the world;
the strength and determination saw the peace banner unfurled.
We marched beside our brothers who in ‘duty’ went to war;
we marched beside our brothers but our flag said “NO MORE!”
So many live were saved there; young men who did not fall
as slowly the whole world listened the peaceful bugles call.
But slowly they corrupted it; the powers that abide
they stripped it down to drugs and sex and there our spirits died.
Maybe the next generation will list the flag again
and finally heal this planet now gone totally insane.
I think that now so many who grew up in the Hippie age
now pace in pretty houses; their expensive Yuppie cage
and wonder just what would have been if we’d known how to grow
instead of dream of what might be and watch the river flow.
Maybe the next generation will lift the banner high
and then perhaps our Spirit can really learn to fly.
