Powerful Owl (Ninox strenua)

Over half a metre tall; what a giant of an owl.
Watch him fly and hear his deep howl.
He lives in a hole in the biggest tree;
the Powerful Owl is flying free.
Awake in the night, quiet through the day;
a life deep in the Wilderness is his way.
Bright golden eyes peer through the night
For possum climbing or bird in flight
These things and more are food for this owl
and high in the trees he’s on the prowl
A giant of a bird in our wide, brown land;
a part of what makes this country grand.
He needs ancient forests so he can grow
but we’ve been cutting them down you know.
Without those forests he just can’t live
so trees are the best gift we could give
to the Powerful Owl, an amazing sight;
a gigantic bird flying in the night.
